Overview of XAT Exam 2025

The Xavier Aptitude Test, or XAT, is a national-level entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of XAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes). The exam is accepted by over 160 B-schools across India for admission to MBA and PGDM programs, including top institutes like IMT Ghaziabad, TAPMI, and XIMB.

What makes XAT unique is its inclusion of decision-making and essay writing sections, skills that go beyond textbook learning and test real-world reasoning. The exam is held once every year across more than 70 Indian cities.

Of course, there are certain eligibility criteria for the XAT exam. They are as follows. 

1. You must have completed a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in any stream from a recognized university.

2. Final-year undergraduate students are also eligible to apply.

3. No minimum marks are required to apply.

4. There is no age limit for appearing in XAT.

XAT 2025 Exam Pattern

The exam pattern for XAT serves as the main ground for your exam preparation, and you need to understand it thoroughly. So, here’s a complete overview of the XAT exam pattern for 2025.

XAT 2025 Syllabus

The XAT exam encompasses five sections, namely, Verbal Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability, General Knowledge, and Essay Writing. You are required to attempt them all. However, note that the Essay Writing section is only conducted and evaluated if you are shortlisted for the next rounds. So, if you want to stand out amidst competition, go through the syllabus below and prepare yourself accordingly.  

Verbal and Logical Ability Syllabus

1. Reading comprehension from abstract and literary sources.

2. Vocabulary-based questions: synonyms, antonyms, and contextual usage.

3. Grammar: error spotting, fill-in-the-blanks.

4. Para-jumbles and sentence rearrangement.

5. Critical reasoning and argument analysis.

Syllabus for Decision Making Section 

1. Ethical dilemmas in management scenarios.

2. HR-related situations and prioritization tasks.

3. Data-based logical problem solving.

4. Day-to-day business decisions and risk analysis.

Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation Syllabus

1. Arithmetic: percentages, profit & loss, time & work.

2. Algebra and equations.

3. Geometry and mensuration.

4. Number systems and modern math.

5. Statistics and data sufficiency.

6. Data interpretation through graphs, charts, and tables.

Syllabus for General Knowledge Section

1. Current affairs (national and international).

2. Static GK: polity, geography, economy, and history.

3. Business and economic developments.

4. Awards, sports, and notable personalities.

Syllabus for Essay Writing Section

1. One topic based on abstract, social, or business issues within approximately 250 words. (Conducted & Evaluated only after shortlist for GD/PI)

To sum up, the XAT exam is going to be very competitive, given the increasing number of applicants every year. Hence, you must prepare yourself accordingly.
