Introduction

For lakhs of aspiring teachers in Uttar Pradesh, the UPTET notification is the first real checkpoint between a teaching degree and an actual classroom posting. The form looks simple from the outside, but many applications run into issues well before the examination, at the registration stage itself, because of mismatched names, unverified Aadhaar, or a missed OTR step.

Understanding the eligibility requirements, required documents, and registration process beforehand can help candidates complete their application accurately and avoid unnecessary delays during verification and this blog walks through it all.

What is UPTET and Who Should Apply

The Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test is a qualifying examination for appointment of teachers in classes 1 to 5 (Primary) and classes 6 to 8 (Upper Primary) in state government, aided, and many recognised private schools in Uttar Pradesh. It is conducted by the UP Examination Regulatory Authority in line with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) framework.

UPTET is relevant for candidates who:

  • You have completed (or are in the final year of) a D.El.Ed, B.Ed, or equivalent teacher-training programme.
  • You plan to apply for UP government school recruitments where TET qualification is mandatory.
  • You are aiming at private schools that ask for a valid TET score as a baseline.

UPTET has two papers. Paper 1 is for those who want to teach Primary classes, Paper 2 is for Upper Primary, and candidates aiming to teach across both levels can attempt both papers in the same cycle.

UPTET Eligibility Criteria 2026

Eligibility is the part where most candidates get confused, because the rules differ for Primary and Upper Primary papers. The minimum age is 18 years as per NCTE guidelines, and there is no upper age limit specified, so working professionals and older candidates can apply too.

Upper Primary (Classes 6 to 8)Graduation in any stream50%B.Ed or equivalent (NCTE-recognised)

Reserved category candidates receive a 5% relaxation on academic marks, in line with state norms. Candidates in the final year of their teacher-training programme are generally allowed to apply provisionally, but the appointment is subject to producing the final qualification certificate at the verification stage.

Documents You Should Keep Ready

The registration portal will not let you save and exit comfortably if your documents are not in the right format, so it is better to assemble everything in one folder before you start. Keep both the original certificates (for cross-checking) and scanned copies.

  • Class 10 marksheet and certificate (this is the master document for name and date of birth)
  • Class 12 marksheet and certificate
  • Graduation marksheet and degree (for Paper 2 applicants)
  • D.El.Ed, B.Ed, or equivalent teacher-training certificate
  • Aadhaar card, with the linked mobile number active for OTP
  • Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC, EWS) if applicable
  • PwD certificate if applicable
  • A recent passport-size photograph and scanned signature, in the size and format mentioned in the notification

The name, parents' names, and date of birth on all documents should match the Class 10 marksheet exactly, because that is the document treated as final at the verification stage.

UPTET Registration Process Step by Step

The UPTET application process is completed in two stages. Candidates first complete One Time Registration (OTR) and then submit the UPTET application through the official portal. The process is as follows:

  1. Complete OTR. Visit otr.pariksha.nic.in, enter your full name (as on Class 10), father's name, mother's name, date of birth, gender, and ID proof details (Aadhaar, PAN, or driving licence).
  2. Verify Aadhaar, mobile, and email through OTP. The system will not unlock the "Register and Proceed Next" button until all three are verified, so use a mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
  3. Save your OTR ID and password. You will need this every time you log in, and the same ID is reused for other UP state exams.
  4. Log in to the UPTET form on upessc.up.gov.in. Choose your paper (Paper 1, Paper 2, or both), select language, and fill in qualification details.
  5. Upload photograph and signature in the dimensions specified by the notification. Mismatched dimensions are a frequent reason for resubmission.
  6. Pay the application fee online through net banking, UPI, or card. Keep the transaction receipt.
  7. Submit the application and download the confirmation page. This is your proof of successful registration.

Candidates should complete the entire application process only through the official UPTET portal and avoid relying on third-party websites for registration or application updates.

What Happens After Registration

Once your form is submitted and the fee is paid, the next milestones are the correction window, admit card release, and exam day. Treat the period between registration and admit card as preparation time, not waiting time. This period can be used to download the syllabus, review previous-year question papers, and begin regular mock-test practice.

Keep a printed copy of the confirmation page, your OTR ID, and login credentials in a single folder. You will need the same details to download the admit card, check results, and later for document verification if you qualify.

Conclusion

Every stage of the UPTET recruitment journey begins with a successful application. From verifying eligibility to completing registration and participating in subsequent recruitment stages, the information submitted at this stage becomes the foundation for the rest of the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an upper age limit for UPTET 2026?

No, the UPTET notification follows NCTE guidelines, which set 18 years as the minimum age but do not prescribe an upper age limit. Working professionals and older candidates with the required qualifications can apply.

Can I apply for UPTET if I am in the final year of my B.Ed or D.El.Ed?

Yes, final-year candidates are usually allowed to register provisionally. However, you must produce the final qualification certificate at the document verification stage if you qualify the exam.

Do I need to complete OTR even if I have applied for other UP exams before?

If you already have an active OTR ID from a previous UP state exam, you can reuse the same credentials to log in to the UPTET form. If not, OTR is the first compulsory step on otr.pariksha.nic.in.

Can I edit my UPTET application after submission?

A limited correction window is opened after the application period ends, where you can edit certain non-core fields. Core identity details like name and date of birth, taken from Class 10, are usually not editable, so confirm them carefully before final submission.
